This is the only story...
"This is the only story of mine whose moral I know. I don't think it's a marvelous moral; I simply happen to know what it is: We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." -Kurt Vonnegut; Mother Night

Once upon a time...
"Once upon a time there was a book and in the book was a nest and in the nest was an egg and in the egg was a dragon and in the dragon was a story..." -Anonymous

True tales have no beginning...
"True tales have no beginning or end. They do not exist only when men say 'Exist!' but instead are always there... reverberating through time in a dance, a weaving if you will. Only humans try to contain it with beginnings and ends. To put boundaries on everything simply because our own lives are bounded by birth and death. And thus, we seek to lessen the power of that which is immortal. True tales have a power of their own though." -The Rain Queen
If you have never spent...
"If you have never spent whole afternoons with burning ears and rumpled hair, forgetting the world around you over a book, forgetting cold and hunger--If you have never wept bitter tears because a wonderful story has come to an end and you must take your leave of the characters with whom you have shared so many adventures, whom you have loved and admired, for whom you have hoped and feared, and without whose company life seems empty meaningless--If such things have not been part of your own experience, you probably won't understand what [he] did next." -Michael Ende; NeverEnding Story

Because stories are like mirrors...
"Because stories are like mirrors... When they've gone dark and the glass is obscured, it's maybe for a reason. Polish them and you might not want to accept the person looking back at you as yourself. We carry these stories inside us--mirrors we can look into, or show other people." -Charles de Lint; Someplace to Be Flying

At night, my mind...
"At night, my mind does not care / If what it thinks is here or there. / It tells me stories it invents / And makes up things that don't make sense. / I don't know why it does this stuff. / The real world seems quite weird enough." -Bill Watterson; Calvin and Hobbes
